State Game Lands 86
SGL | Warren CountyTerrain & Scouting Report
A massive 14,000-acre tract that represents some of the best "Big Woods" hunting in Warren County. It is 99% forested with deep, remote hollows and high plateau tops bordering the Allegheny River.
Recommended Tactics
The "Remote Hollow" approach. Because SGL 86 is so large, most pressure stays within a quarter-mile of the forest roads. Use a map to find the "dead zones" between access points. The deep hollows that drain toward the river act as major sanctuaries for bears and mature bucks during the rifle season. Work the switchgrass plantings and brushy bottomlands where PGC stocks birds throughout the season. Focus pheasant efforts on the flats near the river access points where stocking occurs. Focus on the river eddies and the lee side of the islands during high water or when smaller ponds freeze over. "Jump shooting" from a kayak is a highly effective late-season tactic here.
