Terrain & Scouting Report

Federally managed lands surrounding Tionesta Lake. The terrain is dominated by steep, rocky hillsides and deep hemlock-choked drainages. Much of the land is only easily accessible by boat.

Recommended Tactics

The "Boat-In" advantage. Use a boat to reach the shoreline areas that are miles from the nearest road. This allows you to hunt "backwards"—climbing up from the water into areas that other hunters rarely reach. Focus on the steep, north-facing slopes for bears and the hemlock bottoms for late-season deer cover. Focus on the river eddies and the lee side of the islands during high water or when smaller ponds freeze over. "Jump shooting" from a kayak is a highly effective late-season tactic here.
