Black Bear

Big Game | Season: CLOSED (2025-11-22 - 2025-11-25)
Black Bear

Field Reference: Black Bear

Appearance & Identification

Solid black, often with a brown muzzle; some have a white chest "V".

Preferred Habitat

Deep hemlock draws and remote oak ridges of the ANF. Prefers dense cover like mountain laurel and clear-cuts for daytime bedding.

Seasonal Behavior

Incredibly wary with a sense of smell that far exceeds a bloodhound. Primarily nocturnal during hunting season pressure.

Recommended Tactics

Post-and-drive is common in PA, but solo hunters should focus on "escape routes" between state lands and private sanctuaries. Look for fresh "scat" and "marked trees" on high ridges.

Field Notes & Facts

The PA State Record is a massive 875 lbs (Pike County). In the ANF, bears frequently utilize "rock dens" in the boulders of the Kinzua region.
