Field Reference: Cottontail Rabbit

Brownish-gray fur with long ears and a puffy white "cotton" tail.

Brush piles, briar thickets, and overgrown fence rows near farmland.

Dawn/dusk active; "freezes" to avoid detection before bolting into cover.

Hunting: Using beagles to circle the rabbit or kicking brush piles in thickets.

A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing; they are worn down by the constant gnawing on bark and woody vegetation common in the PA brush.
