Appearance & Identification
Salt-and-pepper gray back with reddish sides and a black-tipped tail.
Preferred Habitat
Hardwood ridges and hemlock bottoms; often seen near stone walls and old farm foundations.
Seasonal Behavior
Curious but cautious. Uses a wide variety of vocalizations. Primarily nocturnal but active in daytime during the mid-winter breeding season.
