Gray fur with a white underside and a large, bushy, white-tipped tail.

Preferred Habitat

Open hardwoods with nut-producing trees (Oak, Hickory, Beech).

Seasonal Behavior

Active in early morning and late afternoon. Known for "barking" at predators.

Recommended Tactics

Sitting quietly at the base of a mast-producing tree. A .22 rifle or 20-gauge shotgun is the standard for Allegheny squirrel hunters.

The "Black Squirrel" is not a separate species but a melanistic color phase of the Gray Squirrel, very common in the Northern Tier of PA.
