Mallard Duck

Field Reference: Mallard Duck

Appearance & Identification

Green head (drake), orange feet.

Preferred Habitat

River eddies, backwaters, and the main Kinzua Reservoir.

Seasonal Behavior

Wary of pressure. Will move to the middle of the river or reservoir when hunters hit the banks.

Recommended Tactics

Small, realistic "river spreads" of 6-12 decoys tucked into bank eddies. Motion is more important than numbers in river current.

Field Notes & Facts

Late-season mallards on the Allegheny are "Red Legs"—hardy migrators that come down from Canada once northern lakes freeze.
