Field Reference: Ring-necked Duck
Appearance & Identification
Medium-sized diving duck with a distinct white ring around its bill and a peaked head shape.
Preferred Habitat
Shallow beaver ponds, river backwaters, and marshy edges of the Kinzua arm.
Seasonal Behavior
Unlike most divers, they are comfortable in small, shallow water bodies. They take off with a rapid, vertical jump.
Recommended Tactics
Small spreads of 12-18 decoys in quiet backwaters. Often found alongside Mallards and Wood Ducks.
Field Notes & Facts
Despite the name "Ring-necked," the chestnut ring on their neck is nearly impossible to see in the field; the "Ring-billed" duck would be a more accurate name.
