Appearance & Identification

Turns white in winter.

Preferred Habitat

High elevation "sky islands" and rhododendron/hemlock swamps.

Seasonal Behavior

Relies entirely on camouflage. Changes from brown to white as the photoperiod (daylight) shortens.

Recommended Tactics

Still-hunting in white-out conditions. Look for the "black marble" eye—it is often the only part of the hare visible against the snow.
