Appearance & Identification

Small, fast ducks with distinctive blue (Blue-winged) or green (Green-winged) wing patches.

Preferred Habitat

The earliest migrators to hit the Allegheny watershed. Prefers shallow mudflats and calm river eddies.

Seasonal Behavior

Fly in tight, erratic bunches at low altitudes. Very responsive to whistling calls.

Recommended Tactics

Early September seasons are best. Use small, lightweight spreads and focus on the first 30 minutes of legal shooting light.
