Pennsylvania bear hunting is uniquely challenging because baiting is prohibited. In the ANF, you aren't just hunting an animal; you're hunting the mast and the thickest cover available.
Bears in 2F head for the mountain laurel the moment pressure hits. Look for "tunnels" in the laurel near the reservoir draws—these are high-traffic escape routes.
While acorns are great, a good beechnut crop in the northern ANF will pull bears for miles. Scout the high ridges early for "bear nests" in the beech tops.
Pro-Tip: During the Firearms season (Nov 21-24), the cold often pushes bears toward the hemlock swamps. If you find fresh "scat" that looks like dark jam, stay in that area—they are feeding heavily on late-season berries or mast.
Successful 2F bear hunters know that food sources shift rapidly in November. Understanding this timeline is critical for locating active bears before they den up.
Successful hunters must check their harvest within 24 hours. The following stations serve our local region during the Regular Firearms Season (Nov 22-23, 10am-8pm).
