Tactics for the Big Timber

Pennsylvania bear hunting is uniquely challenging because baiting is prohibited. In the ANF, you aren't just hunting an animal; you're hunting the mast and the thickest cover available.

The "Laurel Lurk"

Bears in 2F head for the mountain laurel the moment pressure hits. Look for "tunnels" in the laurel near the reservoir draws—these are high-traffic escape routes.

Beechnuts over Acorns

While acorns are great, a good beechnut crop in the northern ANF will pull bears for miles. Scout the high ridges early for "bear nests" in the beech tops.

Pro-Tip: During the Firearms season (Nov 21-24), the cold often pushes bears toward the hemlock swamps. If you find fresh "scat" that looks like dark jam, stay in that area—they are feeding heavily on late-season berries or mast.

Reading the Mast: The Food Cycle

Successful 2F bear hunters know that food sources shift rapidly in November. Understanding this timeline is critical for locating active bears before they den up.

  • Late October: Focus on Black Cherry and wild grapes. These high-sugar sources are primary forage before the hard mast (nuts) drops.
  • November Mid-Season: This is the Beech transition. Bear "nests" (broken branches in tree tops) are highly visible now.
